reconnect: recover: reclaim social space | Introduction
In June 2019 Virtual Migrants and Numbi Arts collaborated on ‘Breathe!’, a protest/performance that asked who controls the local environment in Tower Hamlets, and questioned planning processes that are radicalised and exclusive of the people who actually live in a given locality.
In partnership with XR Tower Hamlets and the Women’s Environmental Network, Virtual Migrants and Numbi facilitated young people and others in creating a performance around the re-occupation of a community garden, and resisting the ‘developers’ who wish to build luxury flats on the land.
A short film was created, since shown at a ‘Who Defines Tower Hamlets’ event, and at the ‘Africa Writes’ Festival at the British Library. A longer version will be launched at an event at Tower Hamlets Library spring 2020.
Breathe! was funded and supported by Artsadmin as part of 2 Degrees Festival 2019
