Tower cranes are eating our cities. The architecture of turbo-capitalism continually reconfigures all relationships, as all that is solid melts into air. Centuries old patterns of living are wiped out overnight, however long they might have taken to emerge from the activities of human communities. Empty apartments and offices proliferate, making money in the ghost economy, zombie housing blocking out our light, like the brains of ants captured by parasitic fungi. The ant keeps moving, but marches to another’s beat. These quick photos were shot on our phones as we moved around Manchester, Birmingham and London, snapped from trains, cars and pavements, while we worked on Breathe! We are weeds, useful plants creating cracks in the concrete, breaking up the ground for planting. The tower cranes fall silent, as plants trail up their lattices and bring them down.
